The Electrical Engineering Department was established in the year 1997. The department has a team of qualified and experienced faculty and support staff. They strive to create new and innovative ways to enhance the quality of education and training being offered. Identification of course content beyond the university syllabus is done to encourage student-teacher team in updating their knowledge. Seminars/conferences are held from time to time to keep the faculty and students abreast with latest developments in the field of Engineering and Technology. The laboratories have the best of equipments and machineries as per PTU curriculum.
The mission of the Department of Electrical Engineering is to offer an EE undergraduate and post graduate program that augments the liberal education and imparts a basic understanding of electrical engineering built on a foundation of physical science, mathematics, computing and technology. Our faculty and students are engaged in courses and research in the fields likewise Control Systems, Electromagnetic, Power Electronics, Microprocessor & Digital Electronics, Power Systems, Electrical Machines, renewable energy systems etc.
The infrastructure and lab facilities are upgraded from time to time and provide adequate opportunities for students and researchers to learn and innovate. The department has distinguished faculty, all holding M.Tech. degrees from renowned institutes in India. The faculty of the department has been constantly carrying out research on many cutting edge technologies and regularly publishes papers in National/International conferences and journals.
The Department is well equipped with a number of PCs hosting several software packages, and linked through a local area network. Internet services are available to all students and faculty. The department is also equipped with software and is being utilized for conducting lab experiments for U.G. as well as P.G. students. The softwares available are ETAP, PSCAD and MATLAB. Students are given a wide degree of freedom to investigate, design, and build a project of their choice. The course Major Project Design Course allows students to apply their newly acquired technical skills to a full year design project.
Electrical Engineering, being a mother branch of Electronics Engineering, Computer Science and Information Technology, offers a wide scope of job opportunities. It encompasses the way electrical energy is produced and used in homes, by the community and industry. The students are placed in top companies like PSPCL, PSTCL, BSNL, ABB, BHEL, Siemens, Infosys, NTPC, Syntel, TCS, Microsoft, etc.
Electrical engineering is a very broad field, ranging from all aspects of information processing, power generation and power distribution. The main areas are Electrical Machines, Electrical Power System (Generation, transmission, and distribution), Power Electronics, Microprocessors, etc. The curriculum of department of Electrical Engineering, GTBKIET, which is designed by PTU Jalandhar, aims to provide engineering graduates, consummate knowledge, and skills required for a successful career in the field of Electrical Engineering. The course is at par with changing technology and enables the students to easily manage to multifarious environmental teams.
Throughout the four-year program, students are encouraged to use their creativity and problem solving skills to explore and think about the unique problems in the world of electrical engineering. Furthermore, students discuss some of the ethical dilemmas that are associated with engineering in general, and how these problems relate to our Social commitment. The Electrical Engineering Department has procured and installed the most modern and up-to-date equipment and software packages for various laboratories to keep the students abreast with the latest trends and requirements of industry. Some of the laboratories are :
Basic Electrical and Electronics Engineering Laboratory
This laboratory is equipped with induction machines, D.C. machines, Transformers, Logic families, Megger, Multimeters, Tranducers and other measuring instruments
Power Electronics Laboratory
The Power Electronics Laboratory is equipped with SCR characteristics kits, UJT characteristics kits, full-wave fully controlled bridge rectifier kits, john’s chopper and Morgan’s chopper kit, Speed control of D.C. motor kit, Thyristorised speed control of A.C. motor kit, Series and parallel inverters, cycloconverters kit, etc.
Electrical Machines Laboratory
The electrical machines laboratory is equipped with different type of machines like : AC, DC Rectifier Unit, DC shunt and series motor/generator, DC motor starter and associated accessories, M-G sets, winding connection study motor, etc.
Transformers with all associated testing equipment. Single-phase induction motors, 3-phase squirrel cage and slip ring induction motors, Synchronous generator, and synchronous motor with all necessary associated equipment.
Power System Laboratory
The laboratory is well equipped with different panels used to study the performance and characteristics of various protective devices i.e relays, MCB and fuse. In this laboratory the dielectric strength of insulating material like paper, mica, backlight and transformer oil also determined.
Computer Aided Power System Analysis lab has the latest software ETAP 5.0.1 (Electrical Transient Analyzing Program), PSCAD 3.0.4 (Power System Computer Aided Design) whereby the students can simulate practical problems arising in the power system e.g. Load Flow Analysis, Fault Analysis Coordination of protective Devices etc.
The department has MAT LAB software to study: Time and frequency response of control system, plotting of Bode, Nyquist and Root loci diagram: Design of control system using Mat lab and simulink.
Instrumentation and Measuring Devices Laboratory
The Electrical Measurement laboratories has various kits used in measurement such as: Frequency Meter, Photo Cell model, Thermistor Model, RTD Kit, LDR Kit, Digital Earth tester etc.
Control System Laboratory
This laboratory offers facilities for practical exercises on the analysis of AC and DC servo system, Potentiometer detector, Transmitter-Receiver characteristics kit, Compensation networks, Stepper motor, PID controller, Pressure transducer, RTD, LDR Capacitance transducer, Air flow transducer, Electromagnetic transducers etc.
